Police have confirmed today that the victim of a carjacking in the 900 block of Lowerline Street early Tuesday was a Tulane University student.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, a gunman carjacked and briefly kidnapped the student about 2 a.m. as she was walking to a friend’s house.

The man, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, approached the woman as she was crossing the street and ordered her back to her vehicle, where he got into the passenger seat and she got behind the wheel, police said. The woman drove a couple of blocks, and then the two switched positions, police said.

The man was driving when the car stopped at Broadway and Freret Street, where the woman escaped from the vehicle, ran to her friend’s house and called the NOPD and Tulane University police.
